Genesis: The Unfolding of God’s Revelational History
The Book of Genesis tells the story of a God who created everything out of nothing in order to bless His people and glorify Himself. In this book, we will encounter a God who speaks the cosmos into existence, forms humanity with care, and gives us the gift of His image. Yet, we will also witness the tragic fall of humanity and the devastating consequences of sin; but, even amidst the brokenness, Genesis shines with hope as God's faithfulness to His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, points forward to His ultimate plan of salvation through Jesus Christ. Then join us as we explore this remarkable book – and let us ask God to open our hearts and minds so that we will come to see that God is at work in our lives, unfolding His perfect plan as He did in creation.
A Rescue Mission
We are prone to wander, prone to leave the God we love – which is why we must remain in the gospel daily. And with this gospel in our hearts, God is now sending us out to rescue others who may have wandered from the truth. Then let us go humbly, deliberately, and earnestly knowing that life is found in Christ alone.
The Prayer of Faith
As we wait for the coming of the Lord, we are called to pray in all circumstances. We’re called to pray for each other when we’re physically sick or spiritually compromised. Then let’s pray with confidence and surrender knowing that we have a God who is powerful, wise, and gracious.
Patience in Suffering
We are called to be patient and stand firm because the Lord’s coming is near. Then let’s not grumble or compromise in our words but let’s persevere in fighting the good fight knowing that God is using our sufferings and trials to grow and mature us to become more like Christ.
The Danger of Wealth
Money is a powerful thing – it can be a tool in the hands of our gracious God, or it can be a doorway to dangerous and evil things. Then may our hearts be captivated by the beauty of Christ today so that we would be made free to use money not for our own personal gains but for the glory of God and the blessings of others.
If the Lord Wills
If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this and that. Then knowing that everything we have is a gift from God, let us live every moment of our lives for His glory – trusting that what He has willed for us is good.
The Danger of Slander
God alone is the Lawgiver and Judge over us – He alone is the One who is able to save and destroy. Then let’s stop slandering each other in light of who God is. Instead, let’s learn to speak the language of heaven – giving glory to the One who gave us mercy and giving grace to those around us.
He Gives Us More Grace
There’s more grace in Christ than sin in us – and those who are humble in heart will receive this grace. Then let us humble ourselves before the Lord and submit to Him knowing that He will lift us up.
Fights and Quarrels
What ultimately causes us to fight and quarrel is not located outside but inside of us – we go to war with others because we don’t get what we want and because of our unsatisfied cravings. The only way to guard ourselves against this is to root ourselves in the gospel – we can love others because God first loved us.
Heavenly Wisdom
Jesus Christ is the wisdom of God sent from heaven to bring peace and reconciliation between God and us. Then as we cultivate and deepen our relationship with Him, may we live a life that honors the Lord and serves the people for this is how we grow in wisdom that comes from heaven.
Words and Their Power
The words out of our mouths may seem inconsequential, but they have the power to bring life or death to the people around us. Then knowing that our tongues speak what the heart is full of, let’s soak ourselves with the Word of God so that our words may always reflect this life-giving gospel truth.
Dead Faith & Living Faith
Saving faith in our hearts is evident in the fruit of our lives. Then knowing that works fueled by shuddering do not bring honor to God, let us endeavor to work out of our love for Him as we anchor ourselves to the gospel for it will empower us to live for His glory.
Don’t Show Favouritism
We must not show favouritism because our faith is in Jesus Christ our Lord of glory. Then let us strive to become a community of mercy and love knowing that this is how we honor the One who gave up everything for us.
Marks of Authentic Faith
Authentic faith not only hears the Word but obeys it, authentic faith transforms every aspect of our lives including our tongues, and authentic faith propels us to move outward – compassionately serving the people in need. This is the kind of faith we’re called to display when we experience the grace of God.
Hearers of the Word
We are called to be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry for this is what it means to live a life that is fit for the Kingdom of God. This can be achieved when we put away our sins and humbly accept the Word as God refines and transforms us accordingly. Then let us immerse ourselves in the Word.
Temptations in Trials
Every trial is also a temptation because every trial is an opportunity to grow or an occasion to sin. Therefore, we must fix our eyes on the Giver – to be completely satisfied by the Lord so that we wouldn’t want anything else occupying our hearts.
Wisdom for the Poor and the Rich
“Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love Him” (Jam. 1:12). Then let us keep eternity in our hearts as we turn our eyes to Christ – the Author and Perfecter of our faith.
Wisdom in Trials
Wisdom is the ability to perceive the purpose of God and carry out the will of God in the midst of our trials. James tells us that if we lack this wisdom, we should ask God because He is generous and eager to provide. Then let’s ask Him for this wisdom so that our trials make us, not break us.
Consider it Joy
We are called to consider our trials pure joy because God is testing our faith, producing perseverance, and maturing us through our trials. Then as we consider the One who endured the cross for our sake, let us stand firm and find comfort in the One who promises to be in the fire with us.
